On a soroban abacus, every bead movement follows a strict rule about which finger to use. Sloppy finger habits slow a child down permanently and are hard to correct later — so getting them right from day one is essential.

The golden rule: thumb and index only

Abacus is operated with just two fingers:

• Thumb — moves the lower ("earth") beads up toward the beam.
• Index finger — moves the lower beads down, and moves the upper ("heaven") bead both up and down.

No other fingers touch the beads. This two-finger system keeps movements minimal and lightning-fast.

Step-by-step finger movements

1. Adding lower beads: push up with the thumb.
2. Removing lower beads: push down with the index.
3. Adding the upper bead: pull it down to the beam with the index.
4. Removing the upper bead: push it up with the index.
