Percentages are everywhere in a maths paper — profit and loss, discount, simple interest, data interpretation, even geometry questions that hide a percentage inside them. And they are where most students lose the most time.
The problem is rarely that a child does not understand what a percentage is. It is that they compute it the long way every single time: convert to a fraction, multiply, divide by 100, simplify. Four steps where one would do.
Here are the shortcuts that turn percentage questions from a minute each into a few seconds each.
Shortcut 1: swap the numbers
This is the single most useful percentage trick, and most students have never seen it.
a% of b = b% of a.
That sounds obvious once written down, but it is enormously powerful. Consider 4% of 75. Worked the usual way you would compute 75 × 4 ÷ 100. But swapped, it becomes 75% of 4 — which is just three-quarters of 4 = 3.
More examples:
- 16% of 25 → 25% of 16 → a quarter of 16 = 4
- 8% of 50 → 50% of 8 → half of 8 = 4
- 12% of 50 → 50% of 12 = 6
- 35% of 20 → 20% of 35 = one-fifth of 35 = 7
Whenever one of the two numbers is a friendly percentage (10, 20, 25, 50), swap them.
Shortcut 2: the 10% building block
Every percentage can be built from 10%, which is just moving the decimal point one place left.
10% of 840 = 84. From that one fact:
- 5% = half of 10% = 42
- 20% = double 10% = 168
- 30% = 3 × 10% = 252
- 15% = 10% + 5% = 84 + 42 = 126
- 45% = 4 × 10% + 5% = 336 + 42 = 378
Teach a child to say "ten percent is…" out loud first, and most percentage questions collapse into simple addition.
Shortcut 3: memorise the fraction equivalents
The fastest students are not calculating at all — they are recognising. These are worth committing to memory the way tables are.

| 10% | 1/10 | 40% | 2/5 |
| 12.5% | 1/8 | 50% | 1/2 |
| 16.67% | 1/6 | 60% | 3/5 |
| 20% | 1/5 | 62.5% | 5/8 |
| 25% | 1/4 | 66.67% | 2/3 |
| 33.33% | 1/3 | 75% | 3/4 |
Once these are automatic, a question like "37.5% of 64" is not a calculation. It is 3/8 of 64 = 24, read straight off.
Shortcut 4: percentage change without the formula
Students are taught: change ÷ original × 100. Fine, but slow under exam pressure.
Faster: think in fractions of the original.
A price rises from 40 to 50. The increase is 10, which is a quarter of 40. A quarter is 25%, so the increase is 25%.
A price falls from 50 to 40. The decrease is 10, which is a fifth of 50. A fifth is 20%, so the decrease is 20%.
Notice those two answers differ even though the numbers are the same — because the base changed. That asymmetry is the single most tested idea in percentage questions, and thinking in fractions makes it obvious rather than surprising.
Shortcut 5: successive percentage changes
If something increases by a% and then by b%, the net change is not a + b. The formula is:
> Net change = a + b + (a × b ÷ 100)
A 20% rise followed by another 20% rise gives 20 + 20 + 4 = 44%, not 40%.
For a rise then a fall, make the second value negative. A 20% rise followed by a 20% fall gives 20 − 20 − 4 = −4% — a net loss. This is why "50% off, then 10% extra off" is never 60% off; it is 55%.
This one formula answers a large share of discount and profit questions.
Shortcut 6: reversing a percentage
"After a 20% discount an item costs ₹400. What was the original price?"
The common mistake is adding 20% to 400. That gives 480, which is wrong.
The correct reasoning: 400 represents 80% of the original. So 1% is 5, and 100% is ₹500. Always ask "the number I have is what percentage of the number I want?" and work back from there.
Practising these properly
Speed with percentages comes from recognition, not from repetition of long methods. A workable routine:
- Week 1 — drill only the fraction table above, 5 minutes a day, until every one is instant.
- Week 2 — 20 questions a day using only the swap trick and the 10% building block.
- Week 3 — successive changes and reversal questions, timed.

Frequently asked questions
At what class should a child learn these? Class 6 onwards, once percentages appear in the syllabus. The fraction equivalents can be learned even earlier as an extension of tables.
Do these shortcuts work in board exams, or only competitive ones? Both. Boards ask you to show working, so write the standard method — but use the shortcut to get the answer first and to check the long working at the end.
My child knows the tricks but still slows down in exams. Why? Almost always because the underlying arithmetic is not automatic. If 8 × 7 still takes thought, no shortcut will feel fast. That is what mental maths training fixes.
Is 33.33% exactly one third? One third is 33.333…%, recurring. In exam questions it is treated as one third, and that is what the shortcut relies on.
How many of these should a child use at once? Start with the swap trick and the 10% block. Those two alone handle most school questions. Add the rest gradually.
